The Balance Between Listening and Leading

Hey Leaders,
If there’s one trap that holds back more leaders than almost anything else, it’s the need for approval. Too many smart, capable people spend their energy trying to keep everyone happy instead of making the right call. And the truth is, if you’re chasing approval, you’re not really leading — you’re performing.
But here’s the other side of the coin: a leader who refuses to listen to any feedback quickly becomes arrogant, out of touch, and ineffective. Leadership lives in the balance.
🧭 Approval vs. Respect
You don’t need everyone to like you. But you do need them to respect you. The difference comes down to how you filter input:
Approval-seeking leaders… bend their standards, avoid conflict, and water down their vision just to be “liked.”
Closed-off leaders… dismiss feedback, ignore blind spots, and eventually lose the trust of their team.
Balanced leaders… listen with curiosity, filter feedback with discernment, and then make a decision with clarity.
Your team doesn’t expect you to agree with everything. They expect you to be clear, fair, and consistent.
🔍 How to Filter Opinions
Before reacting to criticism or suggestions, ask yourself: ✔ Is this feedback coming from someone who has context? ✔ Is it fact-based or purely emotional? ✔ If I acted on this, would it move the mission forward?
If the answer is yes — listen, adjust, grow. If the answer is no — let it go and keep moving.

Your challenge: Think of one piece of feedback you’ve been resisting. Write it down. Ask yourself, is this growth, or is this noise?
Then act accordingly.
